The sporting group comprises some of the most popular breeds, including pointers, setters, retrievers and spaniels. Images of dogs closely resembling these breeds are depicted on the walls of the tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs. Saluki and pharaoh hounds, in particular, can trace their origins back to antiquity. A pampered, yet surprisingly active companion today, it once was a skilled truffle hunter. Some breeds were even bred to finish the job themselves. Mixed Dog Breeds. They are the original hunting dogs, many pre-dating the gun-assisting hunters in their sporting group. The instinct to herd in some of them can be strong in these breeds even if most of these are now plain companion dogs that have never even seen a sheep. This group houses the sheepdogs and cattle dogs, including the amiable collie breeds and those regal kinds, the corgis. Be especially careful in finding a reputable breeder of these dogs.
